Terrorism and Indian State |
|
 |
Insecure yet casual ...India Headlines across various newspapers in Delhi, on Sunday, read 'HELPLESS'. This word summarizes the irony of the Indian state. Terrorists have been striking at will and with increased impunity and the Indian home minister has achieved nothing other than making hollow statements about fighting terrorism with increased vitality. Nothing can symbolize our helplessness more than the faces of our Home Minister and Prime Minister. There is nothing coming out from them other than empty rhetoric.
It has now become obvious that we are safe only because the terrorists have shown some mercy by not striking at more vulnerable spots and with increased frequency. If they had chosen to cause greater disaster they could have done so with much ease since our governments are incapable of safeguarding us. It has failed miserably in ensuring security for our lives.
I have never felt so much vulnerable as I am doing now and I can assure you that most of other urban Indians are doing the same. I nearly escaped a certain casualty by a whisker. On the eventful evening I was planning to visit central park in Cannought Place and due to some urgent work had to skip my plans. Thinking of what could have had happened if I had been there makes me shiver. But it does not take away my sympathy towards those who lost their lives because of the bomb blasts.
Look at the pictures of injured and dead, don't you feel that they are one amongst us. They are not someone from distant Iraq or Afghanistan or from any western world.
It is time for us to think and do some introspection. Why are we so weak and vulnerable? It is because our society is highly corrupt and marooned by various weaknesses. Our society has not been able to carry everyone together. Social antipathy is prevalent everywhere. We are highly feudalistic in nature, discriminating between fellow human beings. Discrimination is the biggest genesis of all forms of terrorism. Even an educated modern Indian has not been able to keep himself above such feelings of discrimination, look at the way we usually talk to a sweeper or an office boy. Our behavior with fellow Indians does not speak great of us. Compare this to western world where each individual has a sense of respect and dignity inspite of their economic and social statuses. In west you are not hounded because of your caste or religion. It is the very reason that west has not seen any major forms of home grown terror.
Social and political corruption is another major issue plaguing India. In India you can get anything done by just paying a bribe. For even getting your just work done through Government you have to pay bribe. Indian police is one of the exemplary example of moral decay. Indian police is nothing but a rogue organization which is more busy extorting money from weak and helpless hawkers and shopkeepers rather than safeguarding the country. You can get forged passports made by bribing them; you can get your illegal goods transported by bribing them at checkposts. Half of their time gets utilized while brokering deals for those in power.
If this is not enough the moral decay of our political class is more devastating. It is worth noting that Chief Minister of Jharkhand is a murder convict, although later he was "exonerated" by higher courts. But by now we also know how justice can be arm twisted to suit those who are in power.
But nothing can take away the responsibility of what is happening with us from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil. When two persons from Bangalore were arrested for Glasgow bombings our prime minister had an extraordinary comment to make, he is supposed to have said that he was having sleepless nights because he was concerned about their well being. His concerns were with suspected terrorists instead with their victims. I have never heard that our prime minister has ever had a sleepless night because of his concerns for victims of various blasts taking place across India. Topping it up is his dilly-dallying on having any tough laws approved for tackling terrorism. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi it seems has been asking him from 4 years to approve the Gujarat anti-terrorism act and has failed miserably in persuading him to do so.
The current dispensation at New Delhi has proven beyond doubt that it is highly incapable of ensuring our security, because for it petty politics comes above its duty of Governance. Further it is supported by leaders who can go to any extent for the sake of power and money. Look at the statements made by Laloo Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav supporting SIMI.
But having said so it doesn’t mean that things may change in the near future, it is highly unlikely that in the next general elections terrorism will be an issue at all nor will the election see an upsurge in voting from urban and educated Indians, the worst hit by terrorism. After all ours is a land of ‘Sab chalta hai..’ (everything is OK), we will forget Delhi as we have forgotten Bangalore and Ahmedabad. There may be another set of bomb blasts before next general elections but it may go totally unnoticed except for the fact that some television channels may cry hoarse for a day or so. Indian society has a remarkable sense of casualness; we tend to take things of utmost importance very lightly.
While writing this article I can only pray to God that it generates within us a sense of urgency. A sense which can make us stand up and fight social and political decay, a sense which makes us vote out stupid and insensitive politicians, a sense which makes us more responsible for not only our family but for the nation at large. Because we are what we are today just because of a stable and progressive nation, the moment our country’s stability, security and progress is compromised our own lives will become miserable.

Z - Against Job Reservation |
|
 |
Apartheid in the name of Social Justice By declaring its intention of bringing in Job reservation in private sector, the Government of India has made its intention clear that it is going to ruin the private sector the way it ruined the public sector.
Why do we need reservation, when the architect of the constitution and dalit leader Dr. B.R. Ambedkar himself had said that reservation should be removed once India completes 50 years of independence? The answer is pretty simple; our politicians are so used to playing emotional issues, that they can’t help using this lucrative issue to garner votes.
Just see how all the political parties, from every shades of colour are all singing the same tune.
What harm reservation can cause us? You have seen the efficiency of all departments and undertakings managed by Government, there is rampant corruption and chaos. Most PSUs are running under huge losses. The main reason being that people are recruited, not because of his or her merit, but because of his or her caste. Promotion is given not because of merit or seniority but because of caste. Already senior, talented and honest government officers are suffering because of the reservation policy implemented there.
The same reservation policy for private sector means that every private company will have to reserve jobs upto 50% for specific castes. Which means that inorder to adhere to the rule, either the companies will have to double its job capacities or remove half of the staff to accommodate quota. It’s a child’s guess that they will never double staff strength instead they will remove half of their staff. Which means that half of our present colleagues and friends, which may include any one of us, will loose job and will be rendered unemployed.
It is just not the end, after this there will be promotion policy which will be enforced on private companies, which will mean that half of the promotions done in each department will be reserved, thus making sure any incompetent person junior to you will become your boss. This will mean that quality of business will go down and Indian companies will start loosing projects from US and Europe to more qualified competitors in China or Philippines. This will overall mean greater job loss in India.
What will private companies do then? They have easy option; they will move out of India and run their operations from China or Brazil. Infact already big Indian MNCs have started doing the same, but after the job quota is forcefully implemented in private sector companies by Government of India, they will do so in bigger ways.
Some US MNCs like IBM and Microsoft may close (or drastically reduce) their operations in India, again resulting in huge job losses in India.
Then why is the Government of India trying to force such a reservation policy on private companies, infact most private companies have a declared policy of not discriminating on the basis of religion, caste, creed and gender, then why?
Thousands of poor farmers are committing suicide due to lack of support from Government, is the government concerned. Market rate of Onions are 800 Rupees to 1000 rupees a quintal but onion farmers in Maharashtra are getting 100 Rs a quintal for an investment of 400 Rs a quintal they made. The huge losses have forced them to commit suicide, has the government done something for them. Instead you will find the agriculture minister of India Sharad Pawar attending cricket matches in foreign destinations.
Rehabilitation of tribals displaced due to industrial projects in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa has been inadequate but this does not bother our politicians.
Can our politicians declare what reservation policy they have within their medical staff and security people? How many parliamentary doctors and parliament security staff belong to the reserved quota? Is the selection policy for such people are based on merit or quota?
Then why are we being forced for such a thing.
It is high time that we start fighting this grave injustice being done to us by our politicians, or else we will be left with nothing. Dear friends lets move out of the comforts of our room and tell our politicians that enough is enough. |
